Modern: Taking crepes to the next level
The rainbow crepe, I find, is a new symbol for that one Tokyo neighborhood, that constantly evolves and redefines its image: Harajuku!
Harajuku symbolizes the fresh and trendy. The commercial and poppy.
Harajukucrepe has been an essential part of Harajuku’s street food culture since 1976 and is therefore an unquestionable piece of Harajuku culture!
Reinventing one of the oldest inhabitants of the area, is yet another sign of Harajuku constant evolving, redefining, the creativity and the high levels of competition for innovation.
Traditional: Sweet beans?!
This traditional Japanese dessert usually attracts divided opinions to say the least.
“Anmitsu” is the most famous and arguably the most popular Japanese dessert, easily found in most Japanese family restaurants and classic tea houses. Anmitsu typically consists of the following: Sweet red beans (Azuki), mochi, kanten and shiratama, topped off with kokutou syrup. In my bowl you can see and extra of kinako ice cream. It’s a great dessert for vegetarians that is often easily available.
Imagining beans as part of a dessert might seem unnatural to you and people usually either hate it or love it, but you should certainly give it a try!
Out of this world: Ramen Ice Cream
Japan is known to be an innovative nation but have they taken it a step too far this time? One of our weirdest discoveries last year was definitely Ramen Ice Cream! Real Foodies know no pain so I gave it a try anyways and I have to say this definitely was something!
A flavor combo I’ve never had in this way so the first mouthful was an adventure! The ice cream is a slightly Salty Butter-Caramel flavor and has baby star Ramen chips inside and on top. “Interesting” is the verdict!
If you’re looking for a way to surprise your kids or spouse, we highly recommend leaving this in the freezer for someone to stumble upon - it will surely make a fun 30 minutes!
